Santa Teresa vs Nosara: Which Is Better?

April 2026 10 min read

Two of Costa Rica's most celebrated beach towns. Both draw surfers, yogis, and seekers of a simpler life. But beneath the surface similarities, Santa Teresa and Nosara offer fundamentally different experiences. This is an honest comparison to help you choose.

The Vibe

Santa Teresa

Raw, creative, electric. Santa Teresa attracts a younger, more international crowd. The energy is artistic and entrepreneurial—think surf-worn travelers, digital nomads, and boutique business owners. The nightlife is vibrant, the food scene is diverse, and there is an undeniable cool factor. Development is rapid but the jungle remains thick. It feels like a place being discovered in real time.

Nosara

Polished, wellness-focused, established. Nosara attracts families, yoga practitioners, and those seeking a calmer rhythm. The town has stricter building regulations, which preserves a more natural aesthetic. It feels more settled, more curated, and more expensive. The focus is firmly on wellness and nature rather than nightlife.

Surf

Santa Teresa offers more variety. Multiple beach breaks along a long coastline cater to all levels, with consistent waves year-round. The main break in front of town is excellent for intermediates, while spots like Mar Azul challenge advanced surfers. Nosara's Playa Guiones is a single, long beach break—excellent for beginners and intermediates, with gentler, more forgiving waves. Advanced surfers may find Nosara limiting after a few days.

Dining & Nightlife

Santa Teresa wins decisively on dining. The restaurant scene is international, ambitious, and constantly evolving—Peruvian-Japanese fusion, artisan pizza, farm-to-table Costa Rican, and French-inspired bistros. Nightlife extends past midnight with beach bars, DJ sets, and fire shows. Nosara has excellent restaurants but fewer options and a quieter evening scene. Most kitchens close by 9 PM. For those who value culinary variety and a social evening atmosphere, Santa Teresa is the clear choice.

Accommodation

Both towns offer luxury villas, but the style differs. Santa Teresa's accommodations tend toward contemporary design—concrete-and-glass villas with infinity pools, jungle views, and Instagram-worthy architecture. Nosara leans toward natural materials—wood, thatching, earth tones. For private luxury with modern amenities, Santa Teresa offers more options at competitive prices.

Getting There

Nosara has a small domestic airport (NOB) with daily flights from San José, making it slightly more accessible by air. Santa Teresa requires either a longer drive from San José (4–5 hours) or a ferry crossing from Puntarenas plus a drive. The journey to Santa Teresa is part of the adventure—but those with limited time may prefer Nosara's easier access.

Travel Tip

Domestic flights from San José to Tambor (the nearest airstrip to Santa Teresa) are available and cut travel time to under 2 hours. A private transfer from Tambor to Santa Teresa takes 45 minutes.

Cost Comparison

Nosara is generally 10–20% more expensive across the board—accommodations, dining, and activities. Santa Teresa offers more budget-friendly options alongside luxury, creating a broader price range. For luxury travelers, both destinations are comparable, but Santa Teresa delivers more value per dollar in the mid-range and budget categories.

"Choose Nosara if you want to disconnect quietly. Choose Santa Teresa if you want to come alive."

The Verdict

Nosara is the better choice for families with young children seeking a calm, wellness-oriented retreat with easy airport access. Santa Teresa is the better choice for couples, friend groups, surfers, and digital nomads who want vibrant energy, culinary diversity, nightlife, and a wider range of experiences. Both are beautiful. But Santa Teresa has an edge that keeps people coming back—and coming back again.
